Discover Colorado's best example of a "working river," the South Platte, with the Colorado Foundation for Water Education.  This two day tour will highlight the lower portion of the river as it winds its way across the urban and rural patchwork of northeastern Colorado. On its journey, the river provides water for numerous communities, irrigation to Colorado's premiere agricultural areas, and is an important stop for migratory birds and other wildlife.

The Foundation's 2008 Tour will highlight:

  • The heritage of the South Platte River, including its historic irrigation systems,
  • The water and energy providers looking to further utilize the river for their multiplying needs,
  • The abundant agriculture the river makes possible, and the challenges those farmers and ranchers face, and
  • The efforts to preserve the riverine habitat necessary to sustain an abundant wildlife population.

What are the stops?

The Foundation's 2008 Tour will make stops at the following locations. See the detailed itinerary for more information

  • Metro Wastewater Reclamation District, Denver CO
  • Barr Lake State Park, Brighton, CO
  • Xcel Energy's Pawnee Power Plant, Brush, CO
  • Town of Sterling
  • Poudre Learning Center, Greeley, CO
  • Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District, Berthoud, CO
