Online Lesson Plans: Teaching the Poetry of Rivers

Free online lesson plans address the interdisciplinary study of watersheds and poetry, and assist students with developing submissions to the River of Words Poetry Contest.

• Five self-paced lesson plans, integrating culture, history, poetry and watershed science
• CSAP-correlated
• Step-by-step instruction for teaching your students the process of writing poetry
• Readings, activities, photographs and Internet links related to each lesson
• Suggestions to modify the lessons for different grade levels
• Developed by accomplished poet and teacher Dr. Kathryn Winograd

What is the "River of Words" Poetry Contest?
An internationally renowned poetry contest conducted in affiliation with the Library of Congress, "River of Words" is designed to help youth explore the natural and cultural history of the place they live, and to express what they discover through poetry and art. The Colorado Center for the Book, and the Colorado Endowment for the Humanities, coordinate the poetry contest for K-12 students in Colorado. For more information see the River of Words website.

What is required?
• Lesson plans are self-taught. Although an advisor is available to answer your questions, there are no formal course requirements.
• All participating teachers are required to fill out an evaluation form after they have taught the lesson plans in their classroom.
